Lego Brickheadz – The Mandalorian & The Child – Set 75317 – This is the way

If you’re a fan of Brickheadz and a fan of the smash hit “The Mandalorian”, this set is for you. At a normal retail price of $19.99 for 295 pieces, set #75317 – The Mandalorian and The Child is easily worth purchase. For those that don’t know, Brickheadz are Lego’s version of Funko Pop and they do a nice job representing the character but also throwing some fun elements into the mix.

When you purchase any Brickheadz set expect unique build features and with any Star Wars set, expect the pink brick always added. Lego Star Wars builders started doing this a few years and rumor has it, Lego has an internal contest amongst designers to see who can utilize a pink brick in the most interesting manner without distributing the integrity of the build. In this case, the elusive pink brink wasn’t much to brag about but it’s always good to see them included as they are an interesting color and brings you a little closer to the builders as every Star Wars set in recent memory includes one.

You can see through the pictures the designers of this set didn’t put much thought into how they utilized the pink brink. Either way, it doesn’t take away from the dynamic features this set has to offer.

I’ll start with my one and only real complaint about this set and we’ll focus on all the positives. Opening Brickheadz boxes are not the easiest thing to do. They aren’t traditional Lego boxes in the construction and are a bit frustrating to open. The reality is, if this is my only constructive criticism The Mandalorian and The Child has a lot going on for itself. That’s usually the case with Brickheadz.

Included is five total bags, the for Mando and two for the Child. Initially, we were excited see a large amount of white bricks in interesting shapes which are used to build the carriage for the Child. Lego did a nice job incorporating that into this set as his safe place has become as interesting as the character himself. We also were eagerly anticipating the shade of green used to build the Child’s head and loveable ears. As you can see the picture above, there is also a good amount of dark brown and a few bright yellow pieces Lego threw into the mix but aren’t really noticed once the build in complete.

Brickheadz always offers interesting build functionality and Mando is no different. With each Brickheadz we purchase and build, we always notice new features and appreciate these sets are usually for ages 10+. In this case, and a first for us, there are pressure fittings for Mando’s armor where the chest pieces are held together and in place as other bricks lock around it. A cool feature that was added and had us momentarily confused. We’ve noticed Lego becoming more dynamic in construction with their smaller sets and offering some complexity along the way. This was evident when we reviewed Duel on Mustafar and reinforced here. To make Brickheadz really work, Lego used a handful of 2×4 bricks with bricks on all sides (picture above). This allowed more detail to be added and give this set a really authentic to character look and feel.

There are quite a few bricks that fall into the NiceBrixx category and make this purchase worth the price just to add these to your My Own Creations. First, was piece #6265642 – the curve white base that creates The Child’s carriage. If you wanted to create a dome feature or an add on to a building or ship, this is a great piece to help make that happen. This set came with four total and they created the right shape for authenticity. Sure you can find these elsewhere, but why not get them while getting this set. Second on our list, was 6314192 – the 2×4 bricks with studs all around. Completely offers the ultimate flexibility for adding any detail you desire. You can use it as a wall piece to a building and add lights to the outside, other features on the inside without taking away from your build. Creating a ship, add this piece, and add translucent single studs for lights. Last on our NiceBrixx list is #6232135 – 1×3 tall brick with a stud on top. This piece provides height and flexibility with any build.

On our NiceBrixx scale, this set rates a 9 out of 10. The price makes the set easily worth it, which is usual for Brickheadz. At $19.99, set #75317 is an immediate purchase as we’ve only seen this go on sale once. Another buying features is the armor for Mando, it’s his entry level Mandalorian armor, not the beskar he wears now so already this is different than the current character. We’d like to see Lego come out with an updated version in the future. If you find this set or are shopping online, buy it! This is the way!
